We have learned a great deal about creating better web sites through support of accessibility guidelines and standards. In every case, all of our users have benefitted from the more structured environment of an accessible web site.

While many customers accept browser limitations imposed by their developers, we have worked tirelessly to create rules and styles that support a wide variety of host/browser combinations. Regardless of the server-based technology we deploy (.Net or J2EE), our solution will support the popular browsers from the major personal computer platforms. DND, Inc. has delivered both thick client applications and web-based applications to customers requiring compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. These customers also supported an assisted-access environment prior to acceptance testing so that we could correct and enhance needed functionality. This cooperative environment provided an incredible education on best practices for general web site development.

Specifics

Our web site provides not only the obvious assistance of a large font option and contrasting color schemes but more subtle improvements in functionality. For example, the web pages containing large fonts use DIV tags instead of TABLEs, which prevent proper scaling and are confusing to screen readers and their users because they can be mistaken for data tables. As for data tables, we also provide multiple identification columns as, often times, the specified primary column will have non-unique (or even blank) values. We also have hidden navigation to the content portion each web page, allowing visually-impaired users to skip over redundant headers (menus, etc.) on subsequent page navigation.
